A Brief List of Excuses.

I thought I’d update you guys on what’s been going on with the DIY or Not documentary project.

  • The deadline was uncertain. Several people have asked me where the project was and I responded truthfully that it wasn’t going as fast as I had expected. That said, I really didn’t have a deadline in mind when I went on the tour. I knew it was much more massive than the previous tour videos that I’d done the tour before, and I wasn’t doing it with any help, so I expected it could take as long as a year (if I really had my shit together, which I don’t of course.)
  • Also, when Joie broke up that was pretty clear sign that either this film was could be either 1) already irrelevant or 2) as timeless as the music and ethic that inspired it. That is both highly motivational and possibly a dagger in my gut. When I first heard the news I was very disappointed that I wouldn’t be able to share the great experiences that I’d had with them throughout their run, and then a little betrayed that I’d committed to making a film about a band that would no longer exist. Whatever! It’s pretty emo anyways.
  • Technical difficulties. Editing was stalled throughout the summer and fall due to the fact that my computer at the time could not handle editing the 400gb of HD footage. In December I finally was able to purchase an iMac! I’ve been consistently reliving the glory days since then and trying to splice together a polished story.
  • I’m being libeled. A few people have hinted at accusing me of embezzling or stealing the money from the Kickstarter project… this is funny because that money barely paid for the cost of lens rental for my DSLR and purchasing a hard drive to store the footage on. Unless I signed a contract to get it done by a certain time, I’m pretty sure this is goodnatured impatience from my Kickstarter backers and friends. Unfortunately your venting on Facebook could destroy my career.
  • I’m doing it, I’m really doing it. If your concern is that I’ll never finish this project and I will have wasted 9 days of my life shooting it, and uncounted hours of time editing it, and your $10-50… I guess all I have to say is trust me, I’m working on it. If you want your money back, I’ll be happy to return it. If you feel the need to talk shit about me on Facebook, well then that pretty much sums up your whole life right there.
  • Any questions? (773) 676-7040 Donuts, go nuts.

I still believe in the spirit of the project. And actually the conclusion is being perfected as I strain relationships and lose friends trying to create something of value with no resources to speak of. Maybe I suck at DIY shit, or not… we’ll see.

Grinding, continued.

Another solid day of editing in the can… Shout outs to Brandon and Tucker at the Salt Walter Taffy House. And to the hapless members of Grown Ups who provided some hilarious moments — I have nothing but love for those guys.

Grinding…

Did a few hours of editing on DIY or Not today with Zach… Joie De Vivre and Annabel are some funny dudes. And Andrew McShan = awesomeness!

Dan and Russ (two-thirds of The Reptilian) talk about being on tour with Empire! Empire! and sharing a van with the maniac behind them, Keith of Count Your Lucky Stars Records.
Well that was quick. In honor of the first people besides me to follow the DIY or Not tumblr, I present another photo tonight. Gotta get to bed though, son!

The van that Joie De Vivre and I took down to South by Southwest 2011 sits parked at a rest stop somewhere in southern Illinois. This was on the road to Lemp in St. Louis where we met up with Annabel.
I’m planning on using this tumblog to update the status of editing of DIY or Not, share select clips/stills from the huge amount of raw footage I have, and hopefully keep everyone interested in seeing the movie and continuing to help me make it.
I’ve had a solid few days of editing in the past week, which has just served to remind me again of how much I owe to the financial backers of the project via Kickstarter, every single awesome person that I filmed or interviewed, and everyone that I met along the way who is involved in the DIY scene somehow.

DIY or Not is taking way too long to edit.

I’m sorry.
